FAQs

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a method of assessing, treating and preventing a wide range of health problems. Osteopaths use a combination of movement, stretching, targeted deep tissue massage and manipulation of a person’s muscles and joints to improve function, relieve pain and aid recovery. You can find out more at the UK’s Institute of Osteopathy.

What is the difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath?

A chiropractor focusses primarily on the spine, whereas an osteopath takes a broader approach and can treat the whole body.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

Although some people do visit an osteopath via a recommendation from their doctor, you don’t need a specific referral. You can simply call us to book an appointment.

What should I do before and after my appointment?

When you call us to book an appointment it is useful if you can give a short explanation of the problem. Wear, or bring with you, suitable clothing – shorts and vest style top are usually ideal, but we’ll offer some advice as to what to wear when you call to make your appointment. It’s also a good idea to avoid taking pain killers before your appointment as this will allow us to get a realistic assessment of your pain and discomfort levels.

What happens during my appointment?

First we’ll spend some time looking at your medical history, your health and your lifestyle. Then we’ll discuss the specific injury or symptoms you are experiencing. Next we’ll perform physical examination where we examine the areas causing concern.

From there, we’ll discuss the diagnosis and the recommended treatments. This might include a series of treatments at the clinic, exercises you can do at home and, perhaps, some changes to your lifestyle.

You’re welcome to bring someone with you to the clinic to sit with you during your appointment.

How long does an appointment last?

Initial consultation appointments will usually take up to one hour.

After the initial consultation, each subsequent treatment session will last around 30 mins.

Each session costs £45

How many treatments will I need?

It is impossible to say as each case will differ but, on average, most patients will feel significant relief within two to six treatments. Chronic cases may take longer.

What can I do to help myself?

It can often be beneficial to perform exercises and/or stretches at home in between appointments. We’ll give you all the information you need at your session.

What is Medical Acupuncture?

Modern acupuncture uses fine needles inserted into muscles to provide pain relief through stimulation of the body’s nervous system. It is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal and myofascial pain and can be used on its own or with osteopathic treatments such as soft tissue massage, articulation or manipulation.
